Alzheimers Resident Design Ideas

If you have elderly relatives or are the primary caregiver for them you need to check this out.

In preparation for our recent proposal to Clarity Point Memory Care (America’s “State of the Art” Memory care facility)  the designers at The Tamarind Group researched designing for the elderly and memory challenged.

What a learning experience!

The Alzheimer’s resident has very specific needs, some of which I have detailed below.  These should be considered when bringing an elderly family member into the house or furnishing a room for them at a local facility or residence.

Seating should have a certain seat back pitch (closer to 90 degrees), and sturdy arms.  The pitch allows for an easy rise and decent, and the arms help the person push up to rise.  Dining chairs should all be arm chairs.

The Tamarind Group can provide these type chairs to homeowners as well as facilities.  Retail stores are not the place to shop for these items.  Call 850-424-3537 for details.

At home try to allow the elderly to have a chair, as a sofa or love seat may be difficult to rise from.

Seating should be designed with a nano technology (or easy clean) fabric.  These fabrics have come a long way and offer incredible resiliency to staining as well as having many stylish colors and textures to choose from.  They will be a welcome addition to your living space.

Occasional tables should have rounded edges and leave plenty of room to access sofas and chairs.  They should also vary in surface color from the floor or floor cover in order to allow the person to differentiate the edge of the table from the floor.

Areas in the home that are frequented by this person should have a natural or bright consistent lighting source.  This is important as helps them feel confident in their movements around the space.  Seating in a naturally lighted area is great for the elderly.

Bathrooms should have high color contrast between the sink, counter top, floor, toilet, and walls.  This allows for the elderly to have a mistake free visit.

Making the elderly family member comfortable in whatever space has been designated for them is of the utmost importance and worth a bit of research and follow through.

Caring for the elderly will be a part of your life at some point, why not be prepare
